It's great if you can shower in your newly acquired 'casa' or 'piso'. The house you bought comes with a contract that will provide you with gas and water. The gas is often delivered in bottle form, the old owner will frequently take the bottles with him when he leaves, so it's up to you to get new ones and that's not always easy.
The contract has to be transferred to your name, you may be visited by an inspector, the pipes have to be in good condition and if there's a piece of hose in place somewhere it's not to be longer than 1,5 meter and no older than five years. There should be a date stamped on the hose.
You can arrange these things through a gestor, but a reasonable estate agent or a decent bank will do this for you as well.
In many towns gas can be delivered through pipelines. You are not required to make use of this system but do realize that 'gas bottles' are an endangered species. There are costs involved in having your gas coming into your house by pipe from the street and, of course the use of it within the house costs money as well. It's cheaper if all your neighbors make use of the pipe system.
Another contract you need is the one for electricity that also must be transferred to your name. Make sure all the bills are paid before you sign, sometimes they won't connect you if the previous owner has large outstanding bills. Getting your electricity connected can be done through your estate agent, the bank or the gestor.
